When you walk into SaRanRam Thai you’ll be a little surprised at its acclaim. It hardly appears different from the hundred other unassuming local restaurants in Queens: a small dining room filled with makeshift, low cost, decorations and a bathroom right around the corner from a bustling kitchen. Once you sit down you’ll be overwhelmed by the menu, but assisted by the few items clearly marked as Michelin Guide recommended. Start with the Miang Kha-Na, a dried pork lettuce wrap that is equal parts sweet, sour, salty, and crunchy. Or start with the fantastic Yum Pla Da Fu Salad, a mix that hides catfish in the thinnest, crispiest, pieces and compliments it with slices of mango and red onion. Main course hitters include the Pineapple Duck Curry, Crabmeat Fried Rice (which easily rivals the Crab Fried Rice at Fish Cheeks), Steamed Fish with Spicy Garlic Lime Sauce, and the Boat Noodle Beef. You also can’t go wrong with classics like Pad Thai and Pad Se Ew, but this isn’t the place to go with your usual. SaRanRam Thai is small but mighty so come hungry and come adventurous.
Who to Bring: Anyone willing to go to Elmhurst.
What to Wear: Keep it casual, and if you’re going without a reservation in the winter, keep it warm.
Reservations: Due to its size there is almost always a wait, but they do take reservations. Call about a week in advance, or try going around lunch time when it’s (slightly) less crowded. If you’re walking in for dinner during peak times, expect a solid hour long wait.
