When walking up to Fish Cheeks you might get a little intimidated. The hostess is equal parts beautiful and cold, seemingly ready to turn you away on a whim. But even without a reservation you have a shot at a table, which will be worth the wait. That’s because Fish Cheeks is everything a restaurant should be. An energetic space where you would spend hours if they let you, laughing with friends over vibrant dishes bursting with flavor. Start with the Zabb Wings - heavily seasoned, crispy chicken that makes you wonder why anyone ever put sauce on a wing. For mains I adore the Crab Fried Rice and the Steamed Fish with Thai Herbs. The latter comes out in an oversized fish platter filled with a simmering cilantro lime broth. Pair the two for a fresh, savory bite. I’m also fond of the Rawaaeng Duck Curry and the Pork Belly Chili Garlic, both of which pair well with the Sticky Rice and Sautéed Cabbage.
Who to Bring: Literally anyone.
What to Wear: Fish Cheeks definitely has a casual vibe, but for the SoHo location I’d recommend keeping it trendy.
Reservations: Despite a second location opening in Williamsburg, reservations are still hard to come by. Reserve a month out for popular times and at least two weeks out for a very early or late dinner. Lunch reservations are readily available, especially during the week.
